The English Short Mat Bowls Association (ESMBA) which is Sport England’s recognised National Governing Body for Short Mat Bowls in England is pleased to be working alongside ACRE (Action with Communities in Rural England) in supporting Village Halls Week.

Short Mat Bowls Clubs can be a lifeline for many village halls as they are regular users throughout the year, Village Halls in turn provide an ideal location to house a Short Mat Bowls Club thus becoming an ideal partnership in the making. 

The ESMBA recognises the need to foster good relationships with Village Hall Committees and by working alongside ACRE will strive to help them in the setting up of a Short Mat Bowls Club in their village. My name is Tony Holland and I'm the joint owner of The Bowls Shop - my dear wife Ann being the other partner. Welcome to our website.

Whilst Ann doesn't Bowl any longer, I've been playing Bowls for some 30 years, and having reached the latter stages of a few National Finals, I guess you’d classify me as a ‘reasonable’ Bowler and certainly someone with experience both Indoors and Outdoors. That means that since I opened the shop in 1992, I’ve been able to listen to my customers, empathise, and dispense the best impartial advice I can to make sure that whatever their ability, their level of experience or the issue they’re wrestling with, they will be able to make an informed choice as well as get a fair deal.

As well as having the shop, I also travel to Indoor Centres during the winter bowling season, and during the summer to various Bowls Tournaments such as those held in Skegness, Great Yarmouth etc. I also get to cover some men’s and women’s National Finals such as the Bowls Scotland National Championships held in Ayr, the Bowls England National Championships held in Leamington Spa and the English Short Mat Bowling Championships.

The Bowls Development Alliance in partnership with Bowls England, English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd, English Short Mat Bowling Association, English Bowling Federation and the British Crown Green Bowling Association have developed a policy for the sport of bowls which outlines the four organisations commitment to ensuring that the sport provides a safe environment for all young people to play. The policy clearly outlines the processes that need to be gone through if a situation arises where a child may be at risk and provides advice on support that is available to you and who you may need to inform. The policy is not just aimed at those clubs with juniors it is also there for clubs that work closely with young people or adults with a disability or those young people or adults who are known to be at risk.

Guidelines have also been developed for those clubs who are seeking guidance on particular aspects of safeguarding for example, there is a job description for a Bowls Club Welfare Officer (formally known as the Child Protection Officer) guidance on how to safely recruit both paid and unpaid volunteers and staff and details of the Local Safeguarding Boards who offer support when needed.
